Minimum: 10+ Seeds Tulip Prickly Pear Seeds (Opuntia phaeacantha) — The Desert Native That Turns Purple in Adversity Tulip Prickly Pear, also called Desert Prickly Pear, is the Southwest's most theatrically responsive native cactus: a low, spreading species whose dark green pads shift dramatically to purplish-red during drought and cold stress, creating a living barometer of desert conditions. Found across the southwestern United States, the lower Great Plains, and northern Mexico, this widespread species forms dense, sprawling thickets reaching up to 8 feet across, typically staying more modest at 2-3 feet tall. Oval to nearly circular pads, sometimes reaching 9 inches long, carry substantial brown, reddish-brown, or gray spines up to 1.5 inches long. Come spring, the plant earns its 'tulip' name: showy, cup-shaped flowers up to 3 inches wide open in brilliant yellow with distinctive reddish centers, sometimes shifting toward peach or pink. What follows is genuinely rewarding: reddish-purple fruits with sweet, mild flavor often compared to pear, ripening through summer and prized by wildlife and foragers. Young pads (nopales) are traditionally harvested and prepared as vegetable across Southwest cuisine. Extremely drought-tolerant, cold-hardy, low-maintenance once established.
