Chamomile Flowers (Matricaria chamomilla) Calming dried flowers used for herbal teas and natural remedies; mild floral flavor with soothing properties

Chamomile Flowers (Matricaria chamomilla) – Dried Flowers for Herbal Tea and Everyday Brewing If you've ever sipped a warm, faintly apple-scented cup of tea at the end of a long day, chamomile is almost certainly what was in your mug. Known botanically as Matricaria chamomilla, these small daisy-like flowers have been dried and steeped for thousands of years, making chamomile one of the most familiar and widely brewed herbs in the world. Beyond its everyday presence in tea cabinets, chamomile offers a mild, sweet, faintly apple-like flavor with soft floral and grassy undertones. Tea drinkers, bakers, and anyone who appreciates a gentle, easygoing herb will find dried chamomile flowers a reliable staple to keep on hand. This is the herb that's found its way into more teacups than almost any other flower on earth. Mild, Sweet, and Faintly Apple-Like Dried chamomile flowers deliver a gentle, sweet flavor often compared to apples, with soft floral notes and a faint grassy or hay-like undertone beneath the sweetness. The taste is mild and rounded rather than sharp or bitter, which is part of why chamomile has remained such a popular, approachable tea for so long. This isn't an herb that demands attention. Chamomile's flavor builds gradually with steeping, offering a fuller, sweeter cup the longer it sits, while a shorter steep yields a lighter, more delicate flavor. Its gentle character also makes chamomile a natural base for blending with other herbs, since it rarely competes with stronger flavors. Chamomile Tea: A Familiar Evening Ritual Steep 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers in hot water for 5 to 8 minutes for a mild, sweetly floral infusion. Chamomile is traditionally enjoyed in the evening as part of a wind-down routine in many households, often on its own or blended with lavender, lemon balm, mint, or a touch of honey. Chamomile tea has a long-standing place in European, Middle Eastern, and North African tea traditions, appearing in household routines across generations as one of the most familiar and accessible herbal teas in the world. Beyond Tea: Culinary and Everyday Uses Chamomile's uses extend beyond a simple cup of tea. Infuse dried flowers into honey, simple syrups, or milk for use in baked goods, lattes, and desserts that carry a subtle floral sweetness. Chamomile-infused sugar or honey can be drizzled over scones, shortbread, or fruit, while finely ground dried flowers can be folded into cake batters or cookie dough for a gentle floral note. Some bakers steep chamomile into custards, panna cotta, or ice cream bases, where its mild apple-like flavor pairs especially well with honey, vanilla, and citrus. A Flower with an Ancient Pedigree Chamomile's use stretches back thousands of years, with records of its cultivation and use appearing in ancient Egypt, where the flower held a notable place in daily life. The ancient Greeks named the plant "ground apple" for its distinctive scent, a name that eventually gave chamomile its modern designation. The herb spread across Europe over centuries, becoming a household staple steeped in cottage gardens and family kitchens long before tea bags made it a pantry standard. Today, chamomile remains one of the most widely consumed herbal teas in the world, a testament to just how far its gentle, familiar flavor has traveled. Dried for Convenience, Flavor Intact Our chamomile flowers are harvested and carefully dried to preserve their pale color and sweet, apple-like aroma. Store dried chamomile in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture, and it will hold its flavor and fragrance for up to a year. Quality dried chamomile should look pale yellow and white with intact flower heads, and should carry a clear, sweet, apple-like aroma rather than a dusty or faded one. Easy Substitutions and Practical Tips When brewing chamomile, a longer steep brings out more of its natural sweetness, so feel free to let it sit the full 8 minutes if you prefer a fuller-flavored cup. Because its flavor is mild, chamomile blends easily with almost any other tea or herb, making it a flexible base for custom blends. For baking, infuse the flowers in warm milk, cream, or honey first to draw out their flavor before incorporating them into a recipe. Strain finely before serving or baking, since the small flower petals can be slightly papery if left whole in a finished dish. Settle In With a Cup of Chamomile Imagine a quiet evening with a mug of chamomile tea steeping nearby, its sweet, apple-like fragrance filling the room. Imagine a batch of chamomile-honey shortbread cooling on the counter, a subtle floral note tying the whole thing together. Dried chamomile flowers offer all of that: a gentle, familiar flavor, thousands of years of history, and a place in nearly every tea collection around the world. Order your dried chamomile flowers, steep your first cup, and settle into one of the most time-tested rituals in herbal tea tradition.
