The warm-climate gardener with the heat and humidity gardenias genuinely thrive in. What This Fragrant Evergreen Shrub Actually Is Gardenia jasminoides, called cape jasmine or common gardenia, is an evergreen flowering shrub native to Southeast Asia, long cultivated for its intensely fragrant, waxy white flowers and dark, glossy foliage. Plants grow 3 to 8 feet tall and wide depending on variety, producing rounded, creamy white blooms 2 to 4 inches across from late spring through summer, often reblooming intermittently. The fragrance is famously strong, carrying well beyond the planting area, and has made gardenia a staple of perfumery for generations. It prefers warm, humid conditions and acidic, well-drained soil, struggling in alkaline ground or cold winters. Hardy in zones 8 through 11, grown as a container plant and brought indoors for winter elsewhere. Growing Cape Jasmine Seeds Start method: Sow fresh seed on well-drained, acidic potting mix; barely cover. Germination: Sprouts in 30-60 days; slow and uneven. Soil temperature: Best 70-80°F. Sunlight: Full sun to part shade; afternoon shade helps in hottest climates. Soil: Rich, acidic, well-drained soil is essential; alkaline soil causes yellowing. Watering: Consistent moisture; avoid letting the root zone dry out or stay soggy. Humidity: Prefers high humidity; dry indoor air can cause bud drop as a houseplant. Fertilizing: Feed with acid-loving plant fertilizer during the growing season. Growth rate: Slow from seed; expect years before a seedling flowers. Pruning: Prune lightly after bloom to maintain shape and encourage density. Hardiness: Reliable to zone 8; grow in containers, bring indoors elsewhere.
