What This Plant Actually Is Ricinus communis, a tender perennial shrub or small tree native to tropical Africa. Plants reach 7 to 10 feet in a single growing season in warm climates, with enormous palmately lobed leaves (5-11 pointed lobes), glossy texture, 1-3 feet across, ranging from green to bronze to burgundy depending on variety. Small yellowish-green flowers in tall spikes appear in summer, followed by the distinctive round, spiny seed capsules in shades of bright red, pink, or burgundy... each capsule about the size of a golf ball and more striking than any ornamental berry. Perennial in zones 9-11; grown as an annual everywhere else. Seed capsules contain three seeds; seeds contain ricin, a potent toxin requiring careful handling. Growing Castor Bean Starting Seed: Sow indoors 6 weeks before last frost or direct sow after soil reaches 75-85°F. Soak seeds 24 hours before planting. Sowing: Plant ¼ inch deep. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil. Spacing: 3-6 feet apart depending on final size desired. Wider spacing = more branching and pod production. Sunlight: Full sun. More sun produces stronger color in foliage and pods. Soil: Tolerates many soil types but prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Will thrive in poor soils. Water: Moderate water. Tolerates drought once established but thrives with regular moisture. Temperature: Loves heat. No frost tolerance. Dies at first freeze in cold climates. Pinching: Pinch the main growing tip around 2 feet tall to encourage multiple stems and more pods. Pod Production: Requires 140-180 days of warm temperatures for good seed pod production. Seed Removal: Remove seed capsules before they mature and split to prevent self-seeding and exposure to toxic seeds. Before You Close This Page Grows 7-10 feet in a single summer.
