bio] Plant Bio Zamioculcas zamiifolia ZZ Plant was first discovered in Africa (its native range stretches across the Eastern half of the continent) in the 1820s, but it wasn't until the 1990s that this easy-care plant started to become readily available as a houseplant. You might not guess it by looking at the leaves, but ZZ Plant is a member of the Aroid family (Araceae), and a cousin of Anthurium, Dieffenbachia, Monstera, Peace Lily, Pothos, and Philodendron. ZZ Plant has a reputation for being practically indestructible thanks to its incredible drought tolerance (it stores water in its thick, fleshy leaves, as well as in its potato-like rhizomes) and ability to grow in low light. Though it tolerates low light, it grows best in a bright spot (within 3 to 4 feet of a large, unobstructed east- or west-facing window is ideal). It can be supplemented – or grow entirely – under artificial lights, as well. Water as the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch, provide average household temperatures, and average to above-average relative humidity levels (above 40 percent is optimal). Note: This plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.
