ZWO AM5N Harmonic Equatorial Mount Head

ZWO AM5N: The Ultimate Portable Mount for Astrophotographers The AM5N is designed with portability and precision at its core, specifically tailored for astrophotographers. Building on the success of the original AM5, the N model introduces enhancements to deliver an even better user experience: AM5N: Improved Cable Management and Seamless Connectivity The AM5N takes convenience to the next level with upgraded cable management and enhanced connectivity. With Bluetooth functionality, you can now connect wirelessly to the mount while keeping your smartphone or tablet connected to WiFi. This allows seamless multitasking between controlling the AM5N and using your device for other tasks. While similar functionality was previously available through Station Mode, the new Bluetooth integration simplifies setup and operation for a smoother experience. Integrated Cable Management To protect your cables and device ports from session-ending snags, ZWO has introduced integrated cable routing. Power and control cables now run internally through the mount, routing seamlessly to the DEC saddle. This design allows you to: Share the AM5N's 12V power output with your mounted devices, such as the ZWO ASIAIR. Connect via the USB-C port for mount control, without crossing the DEC axis. This results in a clean, tidy setup that keeps your imaging gear safe, stable, and easy to manage—so you can focus on capturing the perfect shot, not managing cables. Important Note The USB port on the DEC saddle is not a passthrough connection. It serves solely as an alternative way to connect and control the mount. Lightweight Yet Mighty The AM5N is a true "tiny titan." Weighing only 11 lbs (5 kg), this mount head can carry payloads of up to 33 lbs (15 kg)without counterweights—ideal for most astrophotography rigs, including up to a 130mm refractor or a large Cassegrain. Add optional counterweights, and the payload capacity jumps to an impressive 44 lbs (20 kg). Heavy Duty Mode For even more robust performance, the AM5N introduces Heavy Duty Mode, which reduces the slew speed to handle heavier payloads effectively. This feature not only enhances the mount's capability but also helps conserve power—especially useful when operating in cold climates or with portable batteries. Precision and Versatility The harmonic drive system, powered by a speed reducer and synchronous belt, ensures: High guiding accuracy: Between 0.5 and 0.8 arcseconds. Low periodic error: No more worrying about gear backlash or inconsistencies. Zero backlash, addressing a common issue in worm gear mounts. The AM5N supports both equatorial and alt-azimuth modes, making it one of the most versatile mounts available. A built-in status light on the mount head indicates the mode: Red for equatorial Green for alt-azimuth Power Failure Protection The AM5N features a built-in brake system that automatically engages in the event of a power failure, protecting your telescope setup and ensuring stability. Control the AM5N Your Way The AM5N offers unparalleled flexibility in control, letting you choose between hands-on manual operation or a fully guided, remote experience: Manual Control with the Hand Controller The included hand controller is perfect for those who enjoy a more interactive experience. It provides straightforward controls for navigating the night sky and allows you to easily switch between EQ (Equatorial) and Alt-Azimuth modes. It's an excellent tool for self-guided star tours. Guided Control with the ZWO StarGazing App For a more immersive and feature-rich experience, connect the AM5N to the ZWO StarGazing app via WiFi or Bluetooth. This app offers: Curated celestial target lists: Easily find and track objects in the night sky. GoTo functionality: Automate your telescope's movement to precise locations. SkyAtlas: A digital planetarium with an intuitive selection tool for exploring and selecting targets. Easy access to settings: Adjust mount parameters directly from the app. Advanced Connectivity for Expert Users The AM5N also features a USB port for direct connection to a PC or the ZWO ASIAIR system, catering to advanced users who require greater control and integration with other equipment. Device Compatibility The AM5N supports iPads running iOS 12 or later, including: iPad / iPad Mini iPad Air iPad Pro To use the SkyAtlas feature, a device with at least 6 GB of RAM is recommended for optimal performance. Whether you’re at home or on the go, the AM5N adapts to your needs. Its compact, portable design and cutting-edge features make it a favorite among astrophotographers.
