Zebra Black-Barred Tangs - Mauritius

Acanthurus polyzona The Zebra Black-barred Tang, also known as the Black-barred Surgeonfish, is a visually striking reef fish with a pale-yellow body marked by nine bold black vertical stripes, including one that passes through the eye. Males are particularly distinctive, featuring an elongated body and a prominent tail spin, while females are slightly smaller with less pronounced markings. This species grows to about 8 inches (20 cm), making it a manageable and attractive addition to marine aquariums. In the wild, Zebra Black-barred Tangs are found in shallow reef environments, including lagoons and outer reef slopes, typically over sandy, rocky, or coral substrates at depths down to 15 meters. They are primarily herbivores, feeding on filamentous algae, and exhibit diurnal activity patterns. Males may be territorial, but the species is generally peaceful and can be kept singly or in pairs. In the aquarium, Zebra Black-barred Tangs require a well-established tank with plenty of live rock and a healthy algae population. Sandy substrates and ample hiding spaces allow them to feel secure and display natural grazing behavior. They may gradually accept supplemental foods such as frozen or pelletized algae, but consistent feeding is essential. Considered reef-safe, they do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper tank conditions, attentive feeding, and sufficient hiding spaces, the Zebra Black-barred Tang's bold coloration, active behavior, and generally peaceful nature make it a rewarding choice for experienced marine aquarists.
