Quick facts Product Yerba Santa Smudge Stick Type Smudge bundle Botanical Yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum) Size Approx. 4 inches Aroma Fresh, herbal, slightly sweet Traditionally used for Space cleansing, meditation and ritual prep How to use Light the tip, blow out the flame, let it smolder Meaning & historyYerba santa grows wild across California and the desert Southwest, where it was traditionally gathered by Indigenous peoples for smoke cleansing and blessing — its name, "holy herb," reflects that long-standing reverence. Compared to white sage, yerba santa burns with a lighter, sweeter smoke, which is part of why it's often reached for as a gentler alternative when clearing a room, an object, or the air before meditation. It pairs naturally with practices around protection and grounding and intuition and spirituality, and sits alongside other cleansing herbs in our incense collection, including our eucalyptus smudge stick. How to use itHold the bundle at the unlit end and light the leafy tip until it catches a small flame. Gently blow it out so the bundle smolders and releases a steady stream of smoke. Waft the smoke around the space, object, or area you want to clear, paying attention to corners and doorways, then rest the smoldering end in a heatproof dish between passes. Care & safetyAlways burn over a heatproof dish or bowl, keep the smoldering bundle away from curtains, paper, and other flammable materials, and never leave it burning unattended. Press the tip firmly into sand or ash to fully extinguish it after use, and store the cooled bundle somewhere dry. Frequently asked questionsWhat is a Yerba Santa smudge stick?
