At the heart of the Jewish marriage covenant lies a code—an ancient Jewish secret that every married couple encounters at the very beginning of their journey, though they do not always know how to decipher it. It is a subtle language that invites us to unlock its meaning and use it as a tool to deepen and enrich married life throughout the years. Long Days of White presents the wedding ceremony as a road map for marriage: a spiritual concentrate containing all the elements that come together to create a joyful and profound Jewish home. In a sensitive and illuminating reading, Rabbi Eyal Vered reveals the meanings embedded in the details of the wedding ceremony: the veiling of the bride, the circling of the groom, the ring, the ketubba, the blessings, the tallit, the yihud room, and more. Through an exploration of the verses of Genesis, the marriage stories of the patriarchs and matriarchs, the teachings of the Sages, and Hasidic thought, the wedding ceremony emerges as the essence of Jewish marriage: closeness and intimacy, mystery and modesty, choice and commitment, love built through action, and an awareness of the Divine Presence that dwells between husband and wife. Long Days of White is intended both for couples preparing for marriage and for those who are already married. Both can draw from the wedding ceremony a continually renewed Jewish wisdom that nourishes the couple’s life of love and covenant, transforming a single flash of light into a gentle, vibrant glow that endures for many years. Rabbi Eyal Vered is the rabbi of the Yahdav community in Petah Tikva, a lecturer at Machon Meir, and a faculty member at the Midrasha at Bar-Ilan University. His books, Riddles of Elul and The Work of the Soul, were published by Maggid and became bestsellers.
