The XL18 runs on diesel by itself, or on a diesel + gasoline mix when used with a napalm mix fuel additive. The napalm mix is not required to operate the XL18 — plain diesel works fine — but it’s what unlocks the XL18’s full range and visual impact: longer firing distance, longer burn time per shot, and the dramatic clinging burn napalm is known for. Owners chasing maximum range and shock-factor run thickened diesel + gasoline. The unit ships with one 20oz CO2 tank for propellant pressure. Refillable CO2 tanks and napalm starter kits are sold separately in our Accessories section. How does the CO2 propellant system work? The XL18 uses pressurized CO2 to propel fuel out of the wand — not a fuel pump. CO2’s expansive force is what gives the XL18 its 110ft+ range. No pump-driven flamethrower can match it. Each XL18 ships with one refillable 20oz CO2 tank. CO2 tanks are widely available — paintball shops, sporting goods stores, and welding supply shops can refill them in minutes for a few dollars. Most owners keep a spare tank or two on hand for hot-swap during longer sessions. What’s the difference between the X15 and the XL18? Both run on diesel (or diesel + napalm mix) and use the same propellant system. The split comes down to power vs practicality: XL18 is the flagship — 110ft+ range, 0.5 gallons/second flow rate, and 10× more firepower than the X15 per the official user manual. The most powerful production flamethrower made. Built for buyers who want maximum range and maximum visual impact: pyrotechnic events, public demonstrations, fire-crew training, and serious property work. X15 is the practical workhorse at 50ft+ range. Same napalm capability in a more affordable package — ideal for prescribed agricultural burns, ground clearing, and everyday land management. If you want the biggest and baddest flamethrower in the lineup, the XL18 is the answer. If you want napalm capability for ag work and clearing, the X15 is the better fit. So much better than other want-to-be flamethrowers. I used an Army one in Nam and this is the closest thing to it.” George J. · ✓ Verified ★★★★★ “So much fun. I owned 2 Vietnam-era M9s in the early 2000s. So much easier working with newly-manufactured equipment. Easy to fill, charge and fire. Trying to get my NFPA 160 license so I can do public events!” Alan E. · ✓ Verified ★★★★★ “The XL18 is VERY well made. Totally industrial-grade, just like how this country used to make things. There’s still nothing like American-made products from the Heartland.” EJ · ✓ Verified ★★★★★ “It is very well made, and mine had a minor issue, which they resolved very quickly under the warranty. First-rate customer service and a good product. As far as I am concerned, they are the only company to buy from when it comes to flamethrowers.” William T. · ✓ Verified Read all 54 reviews → ★ As Seen On ★ From Studio to Stage The XL18 is the production flamethrower of choice for major film, TV, and stage productions. The XL18’s 110ft+ range isn’t possible without CO2. The expansive force of compressed CO2 propels fuel further than any pump-driven flamethrower can — and the refillable, hot-swappable tank design means you can run uninterrupted all day. This is the proven, professional-grade approach to high-range flamethrower operation. Same propellant system as the X15 — purpose-built for maximum reach and burn time.
