Common Name: Xanthic Fire Eel Scientific Name: Mastacembelus cf. unicolor The Xanthic Fire Eel is a wild-caught spiny eel sold as a xanthic (yellow) form. It is a spiny eel, not a true eel, with a long, eel-like body, a pointed, fleshy snout and a row of small spines along the back. This xanthic form has yellow coloration in place of the normal darker pigment. It is an unusual and interesting fish that is highly prized by aquarists who enjoy Asian species. Habitat and Distribution: It comes from Southeast Asia (Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia), where spiny eels live in rivers, streams and swamps with soft, muddy or sandy bottoms. Spiny eels spend much of their time buried in the substrate or hiding among roots and debris. Size and Lifespan: It reaches about 20-24 inches (50-60 cm). Lifespan in captivity is not well documented for this species, but with good care it can be expected to live for many years. Diet and Behavior: It is carnivorous and feeds on worms, insect larvae and small crustaceans in the wild. In the aquarium, offer bloodworms, earthworms, shrimp and other meaty foods; many learn to take sinking carnivore pellets. It is peaceful toward large fish but will eat small ones, and it is mainly active at dusk and during the night. Feed a varied diet and remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality. Breeding and Reproduction: Spiny eels are rarely bred in home aquariums. Little is documented about its breeding habits in the wild. Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements: A tank of at least 125 gallons with a soft sand bottom is recommended for an adult. Provide caves, pipes or driftwood as hiding places, and cover every gap in the lid, as spiny eels are notorious escape artists. The water temperature should be kept between 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and soft to hard water. Efficient filtration and regular partial water changes are essential to maintain water quality, and new arrivals should be acclimated slowly. Ideal Tank Mates: Good tank mates include large, peaceful fish that will not compete aggressively for food, such as larger gouramis, barbs, peaceful cichlids and catfish. Avoid small fish and shrimp, which will be eaten. As with any aquarium, introduce new fish carefully and watch for signs of stress or aggression. Difficulty Level: Intermediate. It needs soft sand and a secure lid. It is well suited to aquarists with some experience who can maintain stable water conditions. Water Parameters: Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C) pH: 6.5-7.5 General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: <20 ppm (regular water changes required) Additional Information: Provide a soft sand bottom and hiding places, as spiny eels like to burrow. It is an escape artist, so use a secure lid. Fun fact: Despite their name, spiny eels are not true eels. The Xanthic Fire Eel is an unusual, eye-catching bottom-dweller. With the right setup and care, it will be a rewarding addition for many years.
