A Decade of Expertise The Supermarine Spitfire was a revolutionary vehicle in world history. At REC, we exist at the intersection of two worlds: the love and nerdiness for iconic vehicles, and the passion for watches. So there wasn’t a single doubt in our minds when the opportunity to honor this icon came about. For more than a decade, we’ve been honoring icons, transforming the DNA of history’s finest machines into timepieces. Our track record includes the McLaren F1 GTR, the legendary Porsche 956, and the first production GT40 car ever, alongside drift cars, spy planes, WWII aircraft, movie cars, off-roaders, and famous sports cars. Working together with the Hunter Fighter Collection is a pleasure. You can feel the enthusiasm for the Battle of Britain and Spitfire history fill the whole room. “We’ve been working with REC now for 18 months on the project. It means an awful lot to us that we’re working with a partner organisation who absolutely understands the significance of Pat Hughes and understands the significance of the Spitfire.” John Parker Public Officer, Hunter Fighter Collection Read less Read more Wings of Wartime Pat Hughes & Spitfire X4009 RAF ace Pat Hughes flew Spitfire Mk1a X4009 exclusively during the Battle of Britain. Between August and early September 1940, he claimed nine victories across 21 sorties before falling in combat over London. X4009 became one of the most iconic aircraft of WWII. Its story, like Hughes’, speaks to sacrifice, courage, and the enduring legacy of the Spitfire. Built in July 1940, X4009 was assigned to RAF Squadron No. 234 at the height of the Battle of Britain. Hughes’ bold tactics earned him at least 14 confirmed kills, placing him among the top six aces of the campaign. The aircraft’s wartime career and pilot have become symbols of Allied air superiority. Recovered decades later, X4009 is now one of the most celebrated Spitfire restoration projects in existence. Fragments of the fuselage too damaged to fly again have found new purpose – embedded in the 6 o’clock subdial of the X4009 timepiece. Restoration began in 2020 with new fuselage frames built by Airframe Assemblies. Work on wings, tail, and mechanical systems is now underway. Each watch sold supports this historic rebuild. Out of over 20,000 Spitfires made, fewer than 100 are airworthy. X4009 is one of only four surviving Mk1a variants, making its story – and this series – uniquely significant. The Design Challenge Spirit of the Sky The X4009 Series borrows from both Spitfire design and pilot heritage. The case echoes wing profiles. The crown evokes a nose cone. At 6 o’clock: real fuselage metal, scarred by time and battle. Tributes to Pat Hughes and classic RAF instruments round out the watch – purpose-built for aviation enthusiasts and history lovers alike. The dial reimagines the RAF ‘Dirty Dozen’ style: luminous numerals, Arabic markers, and bold hands behind a shatterproof crystal. A Sellita SW‑461 ticks inside, its custom rotor showing the X4009 in flight. No two pieces are the same. Every disc of aluminum is visually unique – offering a direct, physical link to one of the most storied aircraft of WWII.
