The GE Refrigerator Evaporator is the heat-exchange coil located in the freezer section that absorbs heat from inside the refrigerator, keeping both the freezer and fresh food compartments cold. Refrigerant flows through the evaporator coils, drawing warmth out of the air as the fan circulates it across the coils, which is how your GE refrigerator maintains its set temperature. The GE Refrigerator Evaporator can fail due to physical damage to the coils, refrigerant leaks, or corrosion that develops over time from repeated defrost cycles and moisture exposure. A damaged or underperforming evaporator loses its ability to absorb heat efficiently, causing temperatures inside the refrigerator to rise and food spoilage to occur. Look for these symptoms to help determine if the evaporator may need to be replaced: - Refrigerator or freezer is not cooling to the set temperature - Visible frost or ice buildup on the evaporator coils beyond normal levels - Food spoiling faster than usual in the fresh food section - Warm air blowing from the interior vents instead of cold air - Unusual hissing or gurgling sounds from inside the freezer wall - Refrigerator runs constantly without reaching the correct temperature - Frost or condensation forming on the outside walls of the freezer compartment
