The Whirlpool Oven Igniter lights the gas in the oven burner. It heats up to ignite the gas and helps the oven reach and hold the set temperature. It also works with the gas safety valve by drawing the current needed to open the valve when the igniter is hot. Failure can come from normal wear, cracks in the igniter, or damage from bumps during cleaning or service.
