Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend

Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend is a 750ml California red wine bottled at 13.5% ABV, blending five varietals with select lots finished in used bourbon barrels. Founded in 1979 by Robert Mondavi near his childhood home in Lodi, Woodbridge Winery has built a reputation for approachable, flavor-forward wines — and this expression leans into the bourbon-barrel trend with a genuinely layered result. Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5%  |  Origin: Lodi, California  |  Style: Bourbon Barrel-Finished Red Blend  |  Winery: Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Production & Heritage Woodbridge Winery was established in 1979 in Acampo, California, within the Lodi appellation — a region prized for warm days, cool Delta breezes, and deep sandy-loam soils that concentrate fruit character. This red blend draws on Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Teroldego, Petit Verdot, and Tannat, each chosen for its structural compatibility with oak influence. After primary fermentation and aging, select lots of the wine are finished in used bourbon barrels, then blended back into the final cuvée. The technique layers bourbon-cask character — vanilla, caramel, toasted oak — over an already robust fruit core without overwhelming the wine's varietal identity. Tasting Notes Aroma: Blackberry jam and ripe blueberry lead, followed by crème brûlée, warm vanilla, and toffee. A secondary wave of toasted oak and baking spice rounds out the bouquet. Taste: The entry is dominated by concentrated dark fruit — blackberry and dark cherry — that transitions into sweet vanilla and caramel at the mid-palate. Cocoa powder and cinnamon surface as the wine opens up, supported by a rich, full mouthfeel that the Petite Sirah and Tannat components reinforce. Finish: Long and warming, with toasted oak and toffee lingering well past the last sip. A subtle cocoa bitterness keeps the sweetness in check and invites the next glass. How to Drink Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend Serve at cool room temperature, around 60–65°F, to let the bourbon-barrel complexity breathe without letting the alcohol feel hot. A brief 15-minute decant helps integrate the oak. For cocktails, this red blend works in a Red Wine Old Fashioned, where the existing vanilla and caramel notes mirror classic bourbon cocktail flavors. It also suits a Kalimotxo (red wine and cola), where its bold fruit and sweetness stand up to the mixer. Try it in a Sangria built with dark stone fruits and a cinnamon stick — the bourbon-barrel spice ties the whole pitcher together. Best For Bourbon drinkers exploring wine for the first time Casual backyard grilling alongside charred burgers or ribs Weeknight comfort meals that call for a bold, no-fuss red Introducing friends to the bourbon barrel-aged wine category Frequently Asked Questions What does Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend taste like? It leads with concentrated blackberry and dark cherry, followed by vanilla, caramel, and cocoa powder, all wrapped in a rich mouthfeel with a long, toasted-oak finish. The bourbon barrel influence adds warmth and sweetness without masking the underlying fruit. How does Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend compare to Apothic Inferno? Both are California red blends finished in bourbon barrels, but Woodbridge uses a five-grape blend anchored by Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, while Apothic Inferno relies on a Zinfandel-dominant blend with different supporting varietals. Woodbridge tends to lean slightly more toward dark berry fruit and cocoa, whereas Apothic Inferno generally emphasizes maple and char notes. Is Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend good for beginners? Yes — the pronounced fruit sweetness and familiar bourbon-barrel flavors like vanilla and toffee make it an accessible entry point, especially for drinkers more accustomed to spirits than wine. Where is Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend made? It is produced at Woodbridge Winery in Acampo, within the Lodi American Viticultural Area (AVA) of California's Central Valley, a region Robert Mondavi selected in 1979 for its ideal grape-growing climate. What foods pair well with Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend? Smoked brisket or pulled pork complements the toasted oak and caramel. Dark chocolate desserts echo the cocoa notes in the finish. Aged cheddar or Gouda mirrors the wine's toffee sweetness. Barbecue ribs with a sweet-spicy glaze match its bold fruit and cinnamon character. Grilled portobello mushrooms add an earthy counterpoint to the wine's richness. What sizes does Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend come in? It is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle, and Woodbridge wines are often also offered in 1.5L magnum format, though availability may vary by market. Is Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend worth the price? It positions firmly in the everyday-value tier, delivering a level of flavor complexity — particularly the bourbon-barrel vanilla and spice — that punches above its price bracket within the bourbon barrel-aged wine category. Why Woodbridge Bourbon Barrel Red Blend? The five-varietal blend is the key differentiator here. Where many bourbon barrel-aged reds lean on one or two grapes, the addition of Teroldego, Petit Verdot, and Tannat alongside Zinfandel and Petite Sirah creates a more tannic, structured backbone that absorbs bourbon-barrel sweetness without tipping into cloying territory. Woodbridge's Lodi sourcing ensures ripe, concentrated fruit that can stand up to the assertive oak influence. At its price point, few competitors deliver the same depth of both fruit and barrel character in a single bottle — making it a reliable anchor for anyone building a casual wine rotation that leans toward bold, full-bodied reds.
