Wood Spurge

Wood Spurge (Euphorbia amygdaloides subsp. robbiae)Wood Spurge is a tough, evergreen groundcover for shade that gives you structure and deep green color when many perennials disappear. It spreads steadily to form a dense, weed-suppressing carpet, making hard-to-plant areas feel finished and intentional. In spring, bright chartreuse flower bracts rise above the foliage for a fresh pop of color that reads from across the garden. Once established, it is notably resilient in dry shade, which makes it a workhorse in real-world landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesThis Euphorbia forms low rosettes of glossy, dark green leaves that stay attractive for a long season and often remain evergreen in milder winters. Upright stems carry clusters of lime-green to chartreuse bracts in mid to late spring, adding height and a luminous accent above the foliage. The plant spreads by short runners and gradually creates a uniform mat with a clean, architectural look. Growing Conditions Sun: Part shade to full shade, with morning sun tolerated if soil does not dry out excessively. Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it adapts to average or lean soils as long as winter wetness is avoided. Water: Dry to medium, with regular watering the first season and occasional deep watering during extended drought. Zones: USDA Zones 6 to 9. Mature Size: About 12 to 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, spreading wider over time. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Mass it as a focal point in shade where evergreen foliage and spring chartreuse color can carry the scene. Groundcover: Plant in drifts under trees to form a dense carpet that helps reduce weeds and bare soil. Dry Shade Solutions: Use in tough, rooty areas where many groundcovers struggle once summer heat arrives. Border Structure: Place along shaded borders to provide year-round form beneath taller perennials and shrubs. Rocky and Woodland Gardens: Tuck into well-drained woodland edges where it can spread into a cohesive, natural layer. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Cut flower stems back after bloom to refresh the planting and encourage clean new growth. Cleanup: Remove tired or winter-burned foliage in early spring, taking care not to damage new shoots. Watering: Water deeply during prolonged drought, especially in sunnier exposures or sandy soils. Soil Drainage: Improve heavy soils with organic matter and avoid low, wet spots to prevent crown stress. Handling: Wear gloves when cutting or dividing, since the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Why Choose Wood Spurge? Evergreen Coverage: Keeps a strong green presence through much of the year, especially in milder climates. Spring Color: Chartreuse bracts brighten shaded beds at a time when many plants are still waking up. Dry Shade Tolerance: Performs well in established landscapes where shade and competition limit irrigation. Deer Resistance: It is often avoided by deer and rabbits, helping it hold up in pressure areas. Weed Suppression: Forms a dense mat that helps limit weed germination once it fills in. Wood Spurge is a smart choice when you want shade plantings to look intentional and stay that way with minimal input. Give it well-drained soil and a season to establish, and it will build a durable evergreen carpet with a spring lift of chartreuse color. It is especially effective as the backbone ground layer that makes the rest of a woodland bed look more polished.
