“Joe Johnston is a living legend who helped craft the look of Star Wars™ with his behind the scenes input on concept design, model and prop making and even contributions to the costume and creature departments. The classic “Joe Johnston Sketchbooks” that came out during the original trilogy releases were a massive source of inspiration for young fans at the time… like me! This unique alien sculpture always caught my eye and it was really cool to discover that it was also Joe’s work. I can’t wait to see it in the collections of discerning prop and statue fans and Star Wars collectors!” – Tom Spina (Regal Robot founder) During the production of films, the creature effects team will often dream up new and fantastic aliens and beasts by creating small scaled sculptures, called “maquettes,” to showcase their ideas. From this menagerie of maquettes, the film’s director and producer choose which characters will be brought to life for the film as costumes or puppets and what roles they will play in the story. Joe Johnston sculpted several of these concepts and this particular one was chosen to become the Wol Cabasshite species. Called “Low Overhead” during production, in the film, the creature can be seen trying to lick C-3PO during scenes in Jabba’s Palace.
