Wohnshop (Handsigned)

This advertising poster represents Werner Jeker's mature graphic vocabulary, created for the Lausanne-based home furnishings retailer Wohnshop circa 1990. The work demonstrates the significant shift in Swiss graphic design during the late twentieth century, as practitioners moved beyond the International Typographic Style's grid-based rationalism toward more expressive, deconstructed approaches influenced by postmodern theory and Memphis design. Jeker's compositional strategy employs geometric abstraction to suggest a human figure in motion: the dominant green quarter-circle functions as a torso, while smaller triangular and rectangular forms create the impression of striding legs. The head, positioned atop this geometric body, presents a fascinating hybrid of realistic rendering (the textured hair) and cubist-influenced facial abstraction. This synthesis of figurative and geometric elements reflects Jeker's training at the École des arts appliqués in Lausanne and his subsequent development of a highly personal visual language. The chromatic palette, bold primary and secondary colors against a neutral ground, references both Bauhaus color theory and the more recent Memphis movement's embrace of saturated hues. Typographically, the work maintains Swiss precision while introducing playful elements through the vertical text orientation and two-tone title treatment. The poster stands as a significant document of late twentieth-century commercial graphic design's engagement with fine art discourse. *Note poster is hand signed in pencil in the lower left corner!
