The Witches' Sabbath

The Witches' Sabbath Biblioteca Obscura No. 6 By Bourneville For centuries, the Witches' Sabbath stood at the center of Europe's darkest fears. It was believed to be the secret gathering where witches renounced their faith, entered into pacts with the Devil, performed forbidden rites, and celebrated grotesque ceremonies beneath the cover of night. Whether regarded as historical reality, collective delusion, or the product of religious and judicial imagination, the Sabbath became one of the defining symbols of the European witch hunts. In The Witches' Sabbath, Dr. Désiré-Magloire Bourneville examines the origins and evolution of this enduring legend through the lens of history, medicine, and psychology. Drawing upon medieval chronicles, witch-trial records, theological writings, and early modern accounts, he traces how beliefs surrounding the Sabbath developed over centuries and explores the cultural forces that transformed folklore into judicial evidence. Rather than accepting sensational claims at face value, Bourneville investigates the historical circumstances that gave rise to accusations of nocturnal assemblies, demonic worship, magical flights, and supernatural conspiracies. His study offers modern readers a compelling examination of one of the most influential—and tragic—beliefs in the history of European superstition. Professionally restored from the original edition, this volume preserves an important historical study of witchcraft, folklore, demonology, and the social origins of the witch persecutions.
