Duchy of Brunswick, Coat of Arms

This magnificent chromolithograph presents the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brunswick in stunning polychrome detail, produced by the renowned Wissembourg printing house in Alsace during the 1880s. Two powerful wild men (Wilde Männer), ancient Germanic symbols of natural strength, stand as supporters flanking an elaborately quartered shield. Their muscular forms, crowned with laurel and modestly draped in green leaves, grip wooden clubs while presenting the ducal arms with its eagles, lions, and Saxon horse. The technical achievement here is remarkable: multiple lithographic stones created the rich blacks, vivid reds, golden yellows, and subtle flesh tones that bring this heraldic composition to life. The crowned heart-shaped escutcheon, elaborate blue-silver mantling, and pendant cross of the Order of Saint John demonstrate the printer's mastery of fine detail. A standout piece for collectors of Germanic decorative arts, this print captures a moment when the small states of the German Empire celebrated their distinct identities through the ancient language of heraldry.
