Wissembourg Crest

This magnificent chromolithograph from the renowned Wissembourg printing house captures the grandeur of European heraldic tradition in a stunning display of folk art virtuosity. The crowned eagle, rendered in an extraordinary palette of reds, blues, greens, and golds, clutches the imperial regalia of scepter and globus cruciger while multicolored plumage radiates outward in a spectacular fan of feathers. Produced by C. Burckardt's successor firm in the Alsatian border town of Wissembourg, this print exemplifies the Imagerie Populaire tradition that flourished in the late nineteenth century. The chromolithographic technique employed here showcases the technical mastery of these provincial printers, achieving a richness of color that rivals more celebrated Parisian houses. A striking example of decorative heraldry transformed into accessible art, this print bridges aristocratic symbolism and popular taste. The piece speaks to the complex political landscape of Alsace during the German Imperial period while remaining timelessly decorative. An exceptional find for collectors of European folk prints or those seeking bold graphic impact. Size: 27.0" x 23.0" Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear, fading and toning.
