Willow Globe Discounted

Globe Willow, also known as Globe Navajo Willow, is a fast-growing, deciduous shade tree celebrated for its remarkably dense, perfectly symmetrical umbrella- or globe-shaped canopy. Native to Asia and widely naturalized throughout the American Southwest, this impressive tree features smooth, yellowish-green young twigs clothed in narrow, lance-shaped leaves measuring two to four inches long. The bright green foliage boasts pale, silvery undersides that shimmer in the breeze before turning a clear golden-yellow in autumn. In early spring, subtle, fuzzy yellowish-green catkins emerge along the branches, offering an invaluable early-season nectar source for honeybees and native pollinators before the dense canopy fully unfurls. In residential and park landscapes, Globe Willow rapidly matures to a height and spread of twenty-five to forty feet, casting a wide, cool shadow that makes it one of the premier shade trees for hot, low-desert climates. Its tight, uniform branching structure creates a tidy, naturally rounded outline that rarely requires heavy structural pruning to maintain its classic shape. (Note: Because of its aggressive, water-seeking root system and somewhat brittle mature wood, Globe Willow should be sited at least thirty feet away from underground pipes, septic systems, driveways, and home foundations.) Culturally, Globe Willow is an exceptionally adaptable and cold-hardy tree suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 4a through 9b, enduring winter freezes down to -30°F while handling blistering summer desert heat with ease. It demands full sun exposure (at least six hours of direct sunlight daily) to build a dense leaf structure and sustain its vigorous growth rate of three to four feet per year. It tolerates virtually any soil type—including heavy clay, lean sand, or highly alkaline earth—provided it receives adequate moisture. While more heat- and drought-tolerant than most true willows once established, it performs best with deep, regular irrigation, rewarding minimal care with lush, fast-growing summer shade. Scientific Name Salix matsudana 'Umbraculifera' (Globe Navajo Willow / Navajo Willow) Foliage: Deciduous Fast-growing, deciduous shade tree; extremely dense, symmetrical, umbrella- or globe-shaped canopy. Leaves: Alternate, simple, narrow lance-shaped leaves (2–4 inches long); smooth bright green upper surface with pale silvery undersides; shifts to soft golden-yellow in late autumn. Flowers: Dioecious; produces small, inconspicuous, fuzzy yellowish-green catkins (1 inch long) in early spring alongside emerging leaf buds. Fruit: Small, dry capsule clusters held on spring catkins that open in late spring. Seeds: Minute seeds surrounded by tufts of silky, white cottony hairs dispersed by wind. Bark: Smooth and yellowish-green on young twigs and branches; becomes rough, dark grayish-brown with thick, shallow furrows on mature trunks.  Life Span: Perennial 30–50 years; branches can become brittle with age Mature Height 25–40 ft Mature Width (Spread) 25–40 ft (Symmetrical, equal spread) Growth Rate Fast to Extremely Fast (3–4+ ft per year in moist soils) USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zones 4a–9b (Cold-hardy down to -30°F to -20°F / -34°C to -29°C; highly heat tolerant in desert climates); Requires ~300–500 winter chill hours PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Full Sun (Requires 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily for dense foliage and symmetrical canopy formation). Water Requirements: Moderate to High; thrives with consistent soil moisture; exceptionally popular in Southwestern landscapes near water. Drought Resistance: Moderate once established (Tolerates dry desert air and heat better than most willows, but needs deep irrigation to prevent branch dieback). Soil Type: Highly adaptable; thrives in heavy clay, sandy, loamy, or alkaline soils; pH 6.0–8.5; highly tolerant of poorly drained or wet soils. Deer Resistance: Moderate (Foliage is generally ignored by deer once the canopy rises above reach). Pest / Disease Resistance: Susceptible to aphids, borers, willow leaf beetles, slime flux, and cottonwood root rot (Phymatotrichum) in poorly managed soils; roots aggressively seek water. Pollination: Wind and Insect-pollinated; early catkins provide crucial early-season nectar for honeybees. Pruning: Prune in late winter while dormant to remove low suckers, deadwood, or rubbing branches. Lower limbs can be limbed up to create clear walking space beneath the wide umbrella canopy.
