Wild lettuce Lactuca virosa

Wild Lettuce (Lactuca virosa) is a fascinating herbaceous plant prized for its medicinal benefits and distinct appearance. Growing up to 6 feet tall, this hardy biennial features serrated, spiny leaves and small, dandelion-like yellow flowers that bloom in the summer. The plant exudes a milky sap, known as lactucarium, which has been traditionally used for its sedative and pain-relieving properties, earning it the nickname "opium lettuce." Thriving in full sun to partial shade, wild lettuce is relatively low-maintenance and adapts well to various soil conditions, including poor, rocky soils. While it prefers moist soil, it can tolerate dry spells, making it a resilient addition to herb gardens and wildflower plots. Not just medicinal, this plant is also a draw for pollinators, adding ecological value to its many uses. Whether for its striking form or historical herbal use, wild lettuce makes a unique and purposeful addition to any garden.
