These Wild Apple Tree seedlings will produce an edible apple, typically 2″- 3″ in diameter, although I have seen many of these pop apple crabs around that 2” mark. These trees will all produce apples. However, there will be variations as these are not grafted trees. These wild apple trees will resemble the ones growing around old farmsteads, in fence rows and overgrown fields often seen in the Northeast. Trees will reach a height of 20’+ and grow very well in most soil types or conditions. These apple trees are not conservation-grade seedlings apple trees. Therefore, these will be pruned back to around 2′, with an extensive root system with a 3/8″ diameter+. Wild Apple trees are an inexpensive tool for some enhanced bedding areas, feathered field edges, or any habitat improvements. Hardiness Zones 4 – 8 Apple trees came to Massachusetts in 1635, so they have been reproducing for a very long time. Wild apple trees have created an incredible food source for the white-tailed deer in the northeast. The wild apple trees for sale are descendants of those trees. These trees have made some of the best habitat improvements of all time. They are growing wild from Pennsylvania up through the New England states. Wild apple trees can grow in various soils, from heavy clay mountain soils to fertile bottomland soils. PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR WILD APPLE TREES Plant at least two Wild Deer Apple Trees near each other to ensure pollination. Plant all apples and crabapples in moist, well-drained soil. A soil pH between 5.8 – 7 with adequate nutrient levels will ensure optimal growth. If you have not completed a soil test, click here to improve your soil. I would highly recommend doing so. However, if you are not going to, I recommend mixing 1 ounce for every three sq ft of 0-20-20 granular fertilizer in your soil when planting. The first number tells you the percentage of nitrogen contained in the fertilizer. Nitrogen applied directly to the tree’s roots will cause death to your tree. Make sure the first number is zero. Nitrogen is very mobile in the soil, and you can apply a small of nitrogen the following year. The 2nd and 3rd numbers are Phosphorus and Potassium. Apply these two nutrients at or well before planting because they are immobile in the soil. They need to be mixed in through the soil. We recommend completing a soil test and making amendments for the best results. We recommend applying 1 lb of 10-10-10 for every inch of diameter in the spring of the following year and each year after planting. Wild Apple Trees require a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight for growth and fruit production. Space trees 15′ – 20′ apart and use cages or vented tree tubes of at least 5′ to protect your trees. This will ensure your deer eat your fruit in a few years, not your trees this year.
