German WWI Transitional Finnish Kev Os 4 Helmet | Death’s Head Paint | Complete Liner & Chinstrap

An incredibly distinctive German World War I transitional steel helmet later associated with Finnish service and attributed to Kev Os 4 of the Finnish 4th Division. Featuring an almost completely intact painted death’s head motif, this is the kind of helmet that immediately commands attention in any military collection. Following the First World War, large numbers of German helmets found their way into the inventories of other European armies and military organizations. Finland made extensive use of foreign-manufactured helmets, adapting and continuing to wear them through the interwar and wartime periods. Examples retaining unusual unit or formation markings are particularly desirable because they offer far more individuality than a standard unmarked shell. The centerpiece of this example is the dramatic skull or death’s head painted across the helmet, which remains remarkably complete and gives the piece exceptional visual character. The helmet is associated with Finnish 4th Division Kev Os 4, sometimes described in collector terminology as the “White Death” unit, adding another layer of interest to an already unusual transitional helmet. Just as importantly, the helmet retains its complete liner and original-style chinstrap, giving it the complete appearance collectors look for in a high-end display helmet. For someone seeking a helmet that stands apart from the usual WWI German examples, this piece delivers tremendous presence through its German Great War form, Finnish reuse, surviving interior, and unforgettable death’s head artwork.
