Whole Indonesian Nutmeg (1 ounce)

You should invest in a nutmeg grater in order to utilize this spice to its fullest potential. Ground nutmeg quickly loses its essential oils to evaporation, so having whole nutmegs and grating on an as-needed basis is recommended. Nutmeg tastes spicy, sweet, and slightly bitter with notes of clove flavor. It is somewhat sweeter than mace, and has a more delicate flavor, but the two are very close in taste. Nutmeg has an aroma that is piney with a hint of camphor. In the United States, Nutmeg is a spice that will certainly bring up some nostalgia. It is thought of mostly as a holiday or dessert spice, and as such is popular in pastries, cakes, sweet rolls, banana bread, pumpkin pies, apple pies, chocolate, lemon desserts, cookies, coconut milk, fruit pies, muffins, and sweet breads. Great as a topping on custards, egg nog, whipped cream, lattes, and ice cream. Use it on savory dishes as well, with some chefs citing it as their secret ingredient for eggs, stews, soups like split pea, sauces, seafood chowders, and meatballs! It’s also popular in foods with a dairy base. Nutmeg tastes great with cabbage, carrots, cheese dishes, chicken, eggs, onions, potatoes, spinach, sweet potatoes, and meats like veal or beef. Pairs well with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, ginger, mace, pepper, rosebuds, and thyme. Sourced from Indonesia
