When you order a Whole Beef from MidAmerican Beef, you are purchasing the entire animal, custom-cut to your preferences. We charge $4.50 per pound based on hanging weight—a standard in the beef industry. Hanging weight is the weight of the carcass after initial slaughter and processing but before it’s trimmed, cut, and packaged. For example, a typical whole beef has a hanging weight of about 1,000 lbs. The average total cost of a Whole Beef is $4,500. This number is just an average for your reference and is not your guaranteed total cost. Your total cost will be calculated by the total hanging weight of your Half Beef at the time of processing. Hanging Weight vs Take-Home Weight Breakdown: The entire half beef is weighed after initial slaughter and processing, before it is trimmed or cut into smaller sections for individual cuts. That weight is called the hanging weight. Your cost is $4.50 per pound of that hanging weight. You get to decide how your beef is cut. You pick the thickness of cuts, etc. The entire half is dry-aged for 21 days, fully cut, trimmed, and processed to your specific requests. Most of the time, after all cuts are made, you will take home 60% of that entire half beef. That means your take-home is usually 60% of the hanging weight. What You’ll Take Home For a 1000 lb hanging weight, that’s about 600 lbs of beef in your freezer, including a well-rounded selection of: steaks, roasts, ground beef, and optional soup bones or organ meats. All cuts are flash-frozen for freshness and packed according to your specifications. Why We Price This Way Pricing by hanging weight offers clarity and consistency. You’ll know your base cost from the start and will pay only for the exact hanging weight of your individual animal (e.g., $4500 for 1000 lbs). Additional services—such as individual vacuum sealing, burger patties, or sausage sticks—may be available at an additional charge. Helpful Hint: A Whole Beef typically requires 14–16 cubic feet of freezer space—about half the size of a large upright or chest freezer.
