White Sand Sifting Sea Star

White Sand Sifting Sea Star (Astropecten polyacanthus) The White Sand Sifting Sea Star is a fascinating and beneficial reef invertebrate prized for its ability to keep sandy substrates clean and healthy. With its elegant white to cream-colored body and five symmetrical arms, this beautiful sea star spends its days gliding beneath and across the sand bed in search of detritus, uneaten food, and tiny organisms. Its constant burrowing activity helps aerate the substrate, reducing compacted areas and promoting a healthier aquarium environment. Native to the sandy reef flats and lagoons of the Indo-Pacific, the White Sand Sifting Sea Star thrives in mature marine aquariums with deep, established sand beds rich in microfauna. It naturally feeds on small invertebrates, organic matter, and other microscopic organisms found within the substrate, making it an excellent addition to larger reef systems with abundant natural food sources. Because of its specialized diet, this sea star is best suited for established aquariums with a mature sand bed. It is completely reef safe with corals and most fish, though it may reduce populations of beneficial sand-dwelling organisms over time. Stable salinity, excellent water quality, and careful acclimation are essential for long-term success.
