White Creeping Thyme

White Creeping Thyme (Thymus serpyllum 'Albiflorus')White creeping thyme is a low, fragrant groundcover that forms a dense mat and brightens sunny spaces with a clean flush of white flowers. It is a practical choice for filling gaps, softening edges, and reducing weeds while keeping the garden looking neat. Once established, it handles heat and dry spells well, making it a dependable option for low-input areas. If you want a tough, tidy plant that looks good up close and works hard in the landscape, this thyme fits beautifully. Distinctive FeaturesThis creeping thyme stays very low and spreads into a tight carpet of small, aromatic leaves that are often evergreen in mild winters. In early summer to mid summer, it produces masses of tiny white flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. The stems root as they spread, helping it knit together into a durable ground layer that can handle light to moderate foot traffic once established. It performs best in full sun with sharp drainage, and wet winter soil is the most common cause of decline. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to light shade, with best flowering and densest growth in full sun. Soil: Well-drained soil, especially sandy, gritty, or rocky sites, and avoid heavy, wet soils. Water: Low water once established, watering occasionally during extended drought and more regularly during establishment. Zones: USDA Zones 4 to 9. Mature Size: Typically 1 to 3 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant a bright patch along a sunny edge so the white bloom reads as a clean, low highlight in early summer. Pathways: Use between stepping stones where fragrance releases underfoot and the mat stays low and tidy. Rock Gardens: Thrives in sharp-draining pockets and softens stonework with evergreen texture. Slopes: Helps cover sunny banks with a low, drought-tolerant mat once established. Edging: Creates a crisp, low border line that stays compact and easy to maintain. Low Maintenance Care Trimming: Shear lightly after flowering to refresh growth, encourage density, and reduce woody stems. Watering: Water to establish, then let the soil dry between waterings, because constant moisture can cause decline. Drainage: Improve heavy soil with grit or plant slightly high to keep crowns dry in winter. Weeding: Keep weeds out early, because a clean start helps the mat fill in faster and stay uniform. Feeding: Avoid heavy fertilizing, because lean soil supports tighter growth and better flowering. Why Choose White Creeping Thyme? Bright Summer Bloom: Masses of small white flowers create a clean, high-contrast look in early summer. Fragrant Groundcover: Aromatic foliage adds sensory value, especially near paths and patios. Drought Tolerance: Handles heat and dry conditions well once established in well-drained soil. Pollinator Value: Flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects during peak bloom. Deer Resistance: Often less appealing to deer due to its aromatic foliage. If you want a low groundcover that looks polished and holds up in sunny, well-drained spots, white creeping thyme is a dependable choice. Give it full sun, sharp drainage, and a simple post-bloom trim, and it will stay dense and attractive. It looks best planted in repeating patches or used as a continuous ribbon to unify a border. The result is a tough, fragrant carpet with a bright seasonal flower show.
