The white-breasted nuthatch receives its name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. These birds move down trees head first, giving them a distinctive pose. Nuthatches hide food in trees by covering it with a piece of loose bark or moss. White-breasted Nuthatches can be seen at bird feeders if you offer them large nuts such as sunflower and peanuts, or by putting out suet. Source: Cornell Lab of Ornithology
