When Ravens Come — Inspired by Elijah (1 Kings 17)

Some friendships end before you are ready, and no one asks if you mind. Ari is learning that the hard way. Once the grass was tall enough to hide in. Once Ari and Caleb ran through it every day, with a fort under the olive tree and a secret password and a plan to rule the whole field. Then the rain stopped coming, the grass turned to dust, and the grown-ups began whispering a worried word: famine. And one morning Caleb stood at the door to say goodbye, pressing a little crooked wooden raven into Ari's hand so he would not be forgotten. When Ravens Come retells the story of Elijah at the brook of Cherith from 1 Kings 17, seen through the eyes of a boy who has just lost his best friend and cannot understand why God would take everything away. Chasing a thieving raven across the dry land, Ari stumbles onto a brook, and a man named Elijah being fed by the very birds that swarm around him, bread and meat, every morning and evening, right on time. It is a story about being fed in the lean season, about grief that does not get explained away, and about the quiet promise that we are never left to walk through hard things alone.
