Wells Special Hinoki Cypress

Wells Special Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Wells Special')Wells Special Hinoki Cypress is a refined evergreen conifer valued for its narrow upright habit, emerald green foliage, and polished year-round structure. Its dense branching and fan-like sprays give it a graceful architectural look that works well in foundation beds, conifer gardens, mixed borders, specimen plantings, and informal evergreen screens. This selection has more height and presence than many dwarf Hinoki Cypress cultivars while staying narrower than many larger forms. With full sun to partial shade, moist well-drained soil, and protection from severe drought or harsh drying wind, Wells Special Hinoki Cypress brings long-lasting evergreen character to managed landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesWells Special Hinoki Cypress forms a robust, narrowly upright evergreen with dense branching and graceful sprays of emerald green foliage. New growth may appear lighter green before maturing to deeper green, creating subtle contrast through the growing season. Its naturally multi-stemmed, columnar to narrow pyramidal habit gives it strong vertical presence without excessive width. This cultivar is grown primarily for foliage, texture, and form, with small cones rarely contributing significant ornamental value in managed landscapes. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with at least several hours of direct sun supporting dense growth and strong form. Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and performs poorly in constantly wet, compacted, or very dry conditions. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to prevent stress and foliage browning. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8, with best performance in protected sites that avoid harsh drying winds and extreme heat. Mature Size: Typically reaches about 10 to 15 feet tall and 4 to 7 feet wide in many landscapes, with size depending on age, climate, and site conditions. Habit: Forms a narrow upright to columnar or narrow pyramidal evergreen conifer with dense branching and refined foliage sprays. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a narrow evergreen focal point in foundation beds, entry gardens, courtyard plantings, conifer gardens, or mixed borders where its upright form can stand out year-round. Foundation Planting: Plant near larger foundations or corners where a vertical evergreen can add height, structure, and texture without spreading too widely. Screening: Use in loose grouped plantings or informal evergreen screens where narrow height, year-round cover, and refined texture are desired. Specimen Planting: Feature as a standalone conifer where its emerald foliage, narrow form, and graceful branching can be appreciated through every season. Container Planting: Grow in a large well-drained container where its upright habit and evergreen structure can frame entries, patios, or outdoor living spaces. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during the first few seasons to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed. Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the trunk. Pruning: Prune only lightly to shape or remove dead tips, avoiding hard cuts into old bare wood that may not regrow well. Spacing: Provide enough room for its mature height and width, especially when using it near foundations, entries, or screening rows. Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth. Site Protection: Plant where it has good air movement but some protection from harsh winter wind, reflected heat, and severe drought stress. Why Choose Wells Special Hinoki Cypress? Narrow Upright Form: Provides vertical evergreen structure in a more space-conscious footprint than many broader conifers. Emerald Green Foliage: Displays rich green sprays that hold attractive color through the year in suitable sites. Refined Texture: Offers fan-like foliage and dense branching that bring classic Hinoki Cypress character to the landscape. Screening Potential: Works well in grouped plantings where a moderate-height evergreen screen or vertical backdrop is needed. Landscape Versatility: Fits specimen plantings, foundations, conifer gardens, mixed borders, containers, and informal screens. Wells Special Hinoki Cypress is an excellent choice for gardeners who want evergreen height, refined texture, and a narrow architectural form. Its emerald green foliage, dense branching, upright habit, and year-round structure make it a polished option for foundations, specimen plantings, conifer gardens, containers, and informal screens with moist well-drained soil.
