Cotton Weighted Sensory Blanket — OT-Recommended Deep Pressure Calming Tool for Kids with Autism, ADHD & Sensory Processing

Deep pressure that calms the nervous system — so your child can finally rest, focus, and feel safe in their body. When a child's nervous system is constantly in overdrive — fighting sensory input, struggling to transition, unable to wind down at bedtime — deep pressure touch is one of the most effective neurological tools an OT reaches for first. This cotton weighted blanket provides consistent, evenly distributed proprioceptive input that signals the brain to shift from "fight or flight" to "rest and digest." The result: a calmer child, fewer meltdowns, and better sleep. Who This Helps Children with sensory processing differences who seek or need deep pressure input Kids with autism spectrum disorder who use pressure for self-regulation Children with ADHD who struggle to settle for homework, reading, or sleep Kids with anxiety and difficulty transitioning to bedtime Children with tactile sensitivity who respond well to predictable, even pressure Children with retained primitive reflexes causing heightened arousal Sensory Systems Supported Proprioceptive System — deep joint and muscle pressure that organizes the nervous system Tactile System — soft cotton provides calming, predictable touch input Interoception — helps children feel body boundaries and internal calm Earl's OT Note Weighted blankets work because they activate the body's proprioceptive system — the "hidden sense" that tells your brain where your body is in space. When proprioceptive receptors in muscles and joints are stimulated, the brain releases serotonin and dopamine, and cortisol (the stress hormone) drops. For children who are chronically dysregulated, a weighted blanket during homework, TV time, or sleep can reduce the background "noise" in their nervous system and make regulation significantly easier. I recommend a blanket weight of approximately 10% of your child's body weight as a starting point. — Earl Mamaril, Pediatric Occupational Therapist How to Use Start with short sessions — 15–20 minutes during calm activities before using at bedtime. Let your child lead — they will often naturally seek the blanket when they need regulation support. Use during homework or reading — lap use during seated tasks is highly effective for focus. Bedtime routine — introduce 20–30 minutes before sleep as part of a consistent wind-down routine. Never restrict — a weighted blanket should never be used as a restraint. Always allow your child to remove it freely.
