Weaving: Virtual Workshop with Angela Tong

The Class  Discover the foundations of weaving—no loom required. Join fiber artist and instructor Angela Tong for a playful, beginner-friendly workshop where we’ll learn to create beautiful woven patterns using nothing more than a needle and yarn. We’ll explore the building blocks of cloth — plain weave, twill, and dogtooth — and walk away with mini woven studies that look amazing framed, pinned to a studio wall, or used as inspiration for future projects. Perfect for curious makers, total beginners, or anyone who loves learning new techniques in a low-pressure, high-fun environment. What you’ll need: Come to class with a stash of multiple colors of yarn. We recommend DK or worsted weight yarns. If you choose the class + tools option, your kit will include one bent tip needle, three stiff artist canvas boards (4 inches/10cm by 4 inches/10cm), and double-sided tape If you choose the class only option, you will one bent tip needle, double-sided tape, and three stiff artist canvas boards (4 inches/10cm by 4 inches/10cm) or other rigid, flat item of same approximate size The project We will be making  mini classic weave tapestries including plain weave, twill, and dogtooth weaving patterns. After the workshop you will be on your way to weaving tapestries on any creative surface. For these photography samples, we used MDK’s own Jane yarn. You can use any DK or worsted weight yarn you have on hand; you will not need full skeins. Our Workshop Leader Angela Tong is a fiber arts designer and teacher based in NJ/NY. Her designs have been published in Knitscene, Knit Simple, Knit ’N Style, and PetitePurls.com. Her designs have been included in several books: Classic Elite Shawls, Wraps & Scarves, Crochet Noro: 30 Dazzling Designs and Knit Noro Accessories. Angela is a certified knitting teacher through the Craft Yarn Council of America’s Certified Instructors Program. Angela is a Craftsy Instructor for Rigid Heddle Weaving and My First Mittens & Gloves. In 2022, Angela taught toothbrush weaving at the MDK Knitting Getaway at Shakerag Workshops in Sewanee, Tennessee to several groups of knitters with no previous knowledge of toothbrush weaving!
