WCPC/West Coast Production Company (Iconic San Diego Gay Club/1977–1996)

West Coast Production Company – San Diego, CA (1977–1996) Hancock Street — Dance Floor, Disco, Community. One of the largest and most influential queer nightlife venues in San Diego’s history, the West Coast Production Company — often called WCPC — opened its doors on Hancock Street in 1977 and stayed a vital part of Hillcrest’s nightlife scene well into the 1990s. WCPC wasn’t just a bar — it was a dance club, a social hub, and at times a cultural anchor for San Diego’s growing LGBTQ+ community. In an era before mega-clubs and royal flush sponsorships, WCPC offered: A huge dance floor and powerful sound system beloved by regulars and visitors alike; Nights that pulled crowds from across Southern California and beyond; One of San Diego’s earliest Pride celebration spaces, with floats and festival events tied to WCPC’s parking lot during the 1980s; A place where DJs, amateur contests, drag, strip nights, and community fundraisers all converged under one roof. In the years of the AIDS crisis and city pressure on nightlife venues, West Coast Production Company became more than just a place to dance — it was part of a network of bars where fundraising, grief, hope, and solidarity flowed through the same speakers that blasted disco and house.
