The GE Range Thermocouple is a small safety sensor that monitors the pilot flame or burner flame on your gas range or dual fuel range. It works by generating a tiny electrical signal when heated by the flame, which tells the gas valve to stay open and allow gas to flow. If the flame goes out, the thermocouple cools, the signal stops, and the valve shuts off gas automatically to keep your home safe. The GE Range Thermocouple can wear out over time from repeated heating and cooling cycles, corrosion, or carbon buildup on the sensor tip that prevents it from reading the flame correctly. A weak or failing thermocouple may no longer generate enough signal to hold the gas valve open, even when the burner is lit and functioning normally. These symptoms may indicate your thermocouple needs to be replaced: - Burner or pilot flame lights but goes out shortly after releasing the igniter button - Standing pilot will not stay lit even after holding it for the recommended time - Burner shuts off on its own during normal cooking - Gas smell after the flame unexpectedly goes out - Visible corrosion, discoloration, or damage on the thermocouple tip - Burner works only when the igniter is held down continuously
