The Whirlpool Microwave Magnetron generates the microwave energy that heats food by exciting water molecules inside the cooking cavity. It works with the high-voltage circuit to produce stable output when the oven is set to cook. Common causes of magnetron failure include overheating from restricted airflow, running the microwave empty, extended high-power use, or wear in the high-voltage components that supply the magnetron. Electrical stress, arcing, or damage from a faulty diode or capacitor can also shorten magnetron life. These symptoms can help you decide if the magnetron is the source of the problem: - The microwave runs but does not heat, or heats much slower than normal. - Loud humming, buzzing, or a strained sound starts when cooking begins. - A burning smell or signs of overheating occur during operation. - The unit may stop mid-cycle, shut down, or trip a breaker shortly after starting. - Arcing or popping sounds occur when the microwave is running, especially if accompanied by no-heat.
