The Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Maker is the self-contained unit inside your freezer that automatically produces and harvests ice cubes for everyday use. It works by filling a mold with water, freezing it, then using a heating element and ejector arm to release the cubes into the ice bin below. Once the bin reaches capacity, a shutoff arm or sensor stops production until more ice is needed. The Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Maker can fail due to worn-out motors, a burned-out heating element, a faulty thermostat, or cracked mold components from repeated freeze and thaw cycles. Water inlet issues, calcium buildup, or electrical faults inside the unit can also cause the ice maker to stop working correctly over time. Watch for these symptoms to help determine if your ice maker needs to be replaced: - Ice maker produces no ice despite water supply being connected and turned on - Ice cubes come out undersized, misshapen, or only partially formed - Ice maker runs continuously without stopping or overflows the bin - Loud clicking, grinding, or buzzing sounds during the ice-making cycle - Ice tastes or smells unusual due to residue from a cracked or degraded mold - Ejector arm fails to release cubes, leaving them stuck in the mold - Ice production has slowed significantly compared to normal output
