Vulcan Magnolia Tree

Show-stopping blooms with winter interest If you’re looking for a standout addition to your landscape, this stunning deciduous magnolia offers a delightful combination of winter charm and vibrant spring beauty. The large winter flower buds of this magnolia are wrapped in a thick layer of soft, brownish-gray "fur," providing not just protection from the cold, but also an ornamental touch that brings visual interest during the colder months. As spring rolls in, it rewards gardeners with spectacular blooms that are truly a sight to behold, elevating any garden or yard into a floral spectacle. The rich purple-pink tulip shaped blooms, which take on a deeper ruby red shade as the tree ages, can reach 10–12" wide. Thriving in moist, slightly acidic soil, this magnolia is easy to care for, making it a trouble-free choice for both seasoned gardeners and newcomers. Its compact size allows it to fit neatly in various outdoor spaces. Blooming at a young age, the inviting fragrance and stunning presentation make it a favorite among pollinators, enriching your garden's ecosystem. Plant it where you can enjoy the blooms up close, and allow this wonderful plant to bring warmth and joy to your outdoor space throughout the seasons. Planting & Care 1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a well-drained location that receives full sun to partial shade, ensuring plenty of room for the tree to grow and spread. Dig a hole that's twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep, gently placing the tree in the center before backfilling with soil. Spread a 3" thick layer of mulch three feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back a few inches from the trunk. 2. Watering: During establishment, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water 2–3 times a week during the first growing season, checking the soil frequently and watering when the top 2" are dry. Once established, the tree is moderately drought-tolerant, but regular watering during flowering will help boost bloom quality. 3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. Light pruning helps enhance air circulation and fosters a healthy growth habit, but avoid over-pruning to maintain the tree's natural form. 4. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.
