Voltaire Bust by Houdon Sculpture 26" High

This commanding Voltaire sculptural bust is based on the celebrated original portrait by Jean‑Antoine Houdon, the preeminent sculptor of the Enlightenment whose works defined the visual identity of Europe’s greatest thinkers and statesmen. Houdon’s portraits are revered for their psychological depth and remarkable realism, and his likeness of Voltaire remains one of the most enduring images of the philosopher ever created. Voltaire (1694–1778) was a towering figure of the Enlightenment — a philosopher, satirist, historian, and outspoken advocate for reason, civil liberties, freedom of speech, and religious tolerance. Through his prolific writings and fearless critiques of tyranny and dogma, Voltaire shaped modern political thought and helped lay the intellectual groundwork for democratic ideals in both Europe and America. Houdon captured Voltaire late in life, emphasizing his sharp intellect, penetrating gaze, and unmistakable presence. This large-scale 26-inch bust, rendered in plaster, highlights every nuance of Houdon’s modeling — from the expressive facial features to the intentionally finished back, with the replicated signed words Voltaire by Houdon. Ideal for drawing studies, academic settings, libraries, studios, and refined interiors, this bust offers both artistic and educational value. Its generous scale and classical presentation make it a striking decorative statement for those who admire Enlightenment philosophy, European art history, or the legacy of one of history’s most influential thinkers. A timeless piece that bridges art, literature, and philosophy, this Voltaire bust honors both the genius of the subject and the masterful hand of Houdon.
