Voile HyperCharger Touring Ski

104 mm Ultralight Big-Mountain Touring Ski Voile HyperCharger Touring Ski Tourers who ski big open terrain fast, and who have to earn every one of those descents, are the reason the Voile HyperCharger Touring Ski is built the way it is. A 137-104-121 mm shape at 171 cm keeps an early-rise tip for float and a wide flat tail for control in debris, and the 18.5 m radius at that length is set up for arcing rather than pivoting. At 1,295 g per ski in a 171 the Voile HyperCharger weighs less than many 90 mm touring skis, which is the whole argument for a big-mountain shape on a light layup. Best For Directional tourers who want a stable 104 mm freeride shape at a climbing weight closer to a ski mountaineering ski, for open faces and big objectives. Consider Another Ski If You want a surfy pivoting ski, prefer the damping of a heavier poplar build, or plan to mount telemark bindings, which void the warranty on Hyper Series skis. Early Rise Camber keeps a long stretch of edge on the snow with camber underfoot, so the ski holds a line on firm surfaces instead of releasing early like a rockered tail. Voile doubles the carbon in the Hyper layup specifically because paulownia is softer than poplar, so the stiffness lost in the core is put back in the laminate. The 154 cm comes in at 1,040 g per ski and 125-99-112 mm, which is a genuinely light setup for a smaller skier on a freeride shape. Best Uses Big objectives and long approaches to open terrain Firm and variable snow on the descent Ski mountaineering where the descent still matters Skiers running pin/tech touring bindings Directional skiers who want stability at low weight Ski Specialist's Advice The Voile HyperCharger rewards length because the shape is directional, and because Voile moves the sidecut with the size a shorter ski is also a narrower one. A 154 is 125-99-112 mm on a 17.6 m radius at 1,040 g per ski, and a 185 is 143-108-126 mm on a 20 m radius at 1,505 g per ski. Since the whole run is light, sizing up costs less on the climb here than on the poplar Charger, and heavier skiers should size up rather than down. Voile builds the Hyper Series for AT bindings, and mounting telemark bindings or quiver killers on the Voile HyperCharger voids the Voile factory warranty. Telemark skiers should buy the standard Voile Charger, which Voile rates for their bindings. Mount to the factory boot center mark, which Voile charts for every length, with no plate under the binding. Size brakes to the waist at your length, 99 mm at 154 cm to 108 mm at 185 cm, and run skins at a 140 mm stock width for the 112 to 126 mm tail. Compare the Voile HyperCharger Voile HyperCharger vs. Voile Charger Identical 137-104-121 mm shape and 18.5 m radius at 171 cm, so only the layup separates them. The Voile HyperCharger runs a paulownia core with doubled carbon at 1,295 g per ski, and the Voile Charger runs poplar at 1,545 g. The Charger is damper and telemark rated; the HyperCharger is 250 g per ski easier to climb on. Shop Voile Charger skis Voile HyperCharger vs. Voile HyperVector Same Hyper layup and the same Early Rise Camber profile, 10 mm apart underfoot. The Voile HyperVector is 127-94-111 mm at 171 cm and 1,215 g per ski, tuned toward firm snow and mountaineering. The Voile HyperCharger is the wider, more powder-capable version of the same idea for 80 g per ski more. Shop Voile HyperVector skis Voile HyperCharger vs. Voile Hyper V8 The Voile Hyper V8 is the wider, surfier option at 141-112-123 mm and 1,400 g per ski at 176 cm, with tip and tail rocker built to pivot. The Voile HyperCharger holds a longer running length and a flat tail for edge hold. Choose on turn style rather than on the 8 mm of waist between them. Shop Voile Hyper V8 skis Common Questions Who should buy the Voile HyperCharger? The Voile HyperCharger suits directional tourers who want a stable freeride shape without a freeride weight penalty. At 104 mm underfoot at 171 cm with an early-rise tip, a wide flat tail, an 18.5 m radius and 1,295 g per ski, it skis open terrain at speed and climbs like a much narrower ski. Skiers who prefer to pivot and smear should look at the Hyper V8. How much does the Voile HyperCharger weigh? The Voile HyperCharger weighs 1,040 g per ski at 154 cm, 1,210 g at 164 cm, 1,295 g at 171 cm, 1,395 g at 178 cm and 1,505 g at 185 cm. Voile publishes these as pair weights, so a single number without a length attached is incomplete, and hand-built skis vary between pairs. Is the Voile HyperCharger really a big-mountain ski? The label describes the shape rather than the mass, and that distinction matters when buying. Voile classes the HyperCharger as big mountain on the strength of its long running length, flat tail and early-rise tip, all of which hold up at speed. At 1,295 g per ski at 171 cm it weighs less than many 90 mm touring skis, so a heavy skier driving it hard in rough snow will find its limit sooner than the classification suggests. What bindings work with the Voile HyperCharger? The Voile HyperCharger is built for AT bindings, including pin/tech touring bindings, and takes a standard mount without a reinforcing plate. Mounting telemark bindings or quiver killers on a Hyper Series ski voids the Voile factory warranty, so tele skiers should buy the standard Voile Charger. Match binding to your boot sole norm, and size any brakes to the waist, 99 mm at 154 cm up to 108 mm at 185 cm. What length Voile HyperCharger should I ski? Take the length you would ski at the resort rather than shortening for touring, because the shape is directional and because a shorter Voile is also a narrower one. The 154 comes in at 125-99-112 mm on a 17.6 m radius, the 171 at 137-104-121 mm on 18.5 m and the 185 at 143-108-126 mm on 20 m. Low weight across the whole run makes sizing up cheap. How does the Voile HyperCharger handle firm snow? Well for its weight, which is the point of the shape. Early Rise Camber keeps a long stretch of edge engaged, the tail stays wide and flat rather than tapering, and camber underfoot with full-perimeter steel edges gives real grip. There is no metal in the laminate, so at high speed on refrozen snow the ski still gets busy underfoot. What skins fit the Voile HyperCharger? Take skins at a 140 mm stock width. The tail runs 112 mm at 154 cm to 126 mm at 185 cm, so 120 mm stock leaves tail edges bare on all but the shortest length. Size to the tail rather than the 104 mm waist. Our Verdict The Voile HyperCharger Touring Ski puts a directional freeride shape on a climbing weight that has no business carrying it. Early Rise Camber holds a long running length with camber underfoot, the 137-104-121 mm shape at 171 cm floats on an early-rise tip, and the wide flat tail keeps working through debris. At 1,295 g per ski in a 171 the paulownia core and two Voile Carbon-Weave layers bring the ski 250 g per ski under the poplar Charger, which is what puts a 104 mm ski on a long objective. Heavier skiers who want damping over grams should take the Charger, and telemark skiers have to.
