This elegant hand-colored map from a mid-nineteenth century American classical atlas presents Roman North Africa with scholarly precision and artistic refinement. Published by Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia, the map delineates the provinces of Mauritania, Numidia, and Africa Propria, territories that served as Rome's granary and the setting for some of antiquity's most dramatic moments, from Hannibal's origins to Augustine's bishopric. The fine steel engraving captures hundreds of Latin place names, from Carthage to Cirta to the Atlas Mountains, while delicate watercolor washes in pink, yellow, green, and orange distinguish the provincial boundaries. The decorative cartouche frames the title in period typography, and the scale bar thoughtfully measures distances in Roman miles. This is cartography as both education and art. A handsome example of American classical scholarship reaching back across millennia to illuminate the ancient world. An excellent addition to collections focused on Roman history, North African studies, or the golden age of American atlas publishing. Size: 8.5" x 10.25" Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear. Paper toning in accordance with the print's age. Marks/stains as per photo. Wear around the edges and minor paper loss might be present in some prints. Original fold lines may be present.
