Vaughn’s Lillie Oakleaf Hydrangea

If you want a hydrangea that fits your space and pulls its weight in every season, Vaughn’s Lillie might be the one. This compact oakleaf hydrangea tops out around 4 feet tall and spreads to 5 feet wide—making it ideal for front yards, borders, containers, or anywhere you want big garden interest without the bulk. It blooms early in the summer with full heads of white flowers that slowly blush pink as they age. Come fall, the foliage turns a deep burgundy red, and in winter, the peeling bark adds warmth and texture even when everything else has gone quiet. Blooms that evolve through the season: The flower show starts in early summer with lime green buds that open into large, white panicles—full and a little bit droopy, in a good way. As the season progresses, those same blooms soften into blush pink tones, giving your garden a layered, lived-in feel. Fall foliage with real depth: This isn’t subtle fall color. Vaughn’s Lillie brings out bold burgundy tones that hold their own in the autumn landscape. The deep lobes of the leaves give it texture and shape you don’t get from most shrubs. Interest that carries through winter: Once the leaves drop, Vaughn’s Lillie doesn’t fade into the background. Its exfoliating bark peels back to show off rich, red-brown tones that catch the light and add structure when your garden needs it most.
