Variegated Honeybell Tangelo Tree

Showy blooms and eye-catching foliage The Variegated Honeybell, also known as the Variegated Minneola Tangelo, captivates with its striking green-and-cream variegated foliage, creating a vibrant focal point in any landscape. Its crisp white spring blooms pop beautifully against the patterned leaves, making this tree a true showpiece during flowering season. Perfect for patios, containers, or sunny landscape beds, it combines ornamental appeal with productive performance. But this tree offers more than just beautiful foliage. A cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine, the Variegated Honeybell produces large, bell-shaped fruit that is as impressive as it is delicious. The fruit ripens to a rich orange hue and is juicy and sugary-sweet with a mild, refreshing tartness. Nearly seedless and easy to peel, these tangelos are ideal for fresh eating right off the tree. Whether featured as a patio specimen or planted in the landscape, this citrus tree delivers year-round visual interest along with a rewarding harvest. With its ornamental beauty and outstanding fruit quality, the Variegated Honeybell Tangelo Tree is a standout addition to any citrus collection. Planting & Care 1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Select a location with well-draining soil and ample sunlight. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just deep enough to accommodate the roots without crowding. Carefully remove the plant from its pot and place it in the hole, backfilling gently with soil. Water well after planting to help settle the soil around the roots. Container Growth: Choose a container that is only 1-2" larger in diameter than it's nursery pot. Clay pots are best for root health, but other materials can be used as long as they have drainage holes. Use citrus potting mix and add in additional perlite. Water thoroughly until water comes out of the drainage holes. Allow the soil to dry 2" before watering again. At the end of the growing season, bring citrus indoors once temperatures are 50 F at night, which protects roots from cold damage. Place in a sunny window so that the plant gets at least 5 hours of direct sun, or supplement with a full spectrum grow light, on for 12-16 hours, off for 8 hours. Reduce water and stop fertilizing in winter, as the plant will slow its growth in winter. 2. Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells or if the tree is in a container. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. It’s best to water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce evaporation. Always water at the base and avoid overhead watering. 3. Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for the Variegated Honeybell but can be done to maintain shape and remove any dead or weakened branches. It’s advisable to prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. 4. Fertilizing: Fertilize the tree with a citrus specific fertilizer, which includes specific nutrients which citrus need to thrive. This helps encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Be careful to follow package instructions for the right amount to use based on the size of your tree.
