Electricity, Men of the Day- Vanity Fair

This distinguished Vanity Fair caricature captures Sir David Lionel Salomons, the pioneering electrical engineer who helped bring the age of electricity to Britain. Rendered by the legendary 'Spy' (Sir Leslie Ward), the portrait presents Salomons with his magnificent handlebar mustache, standing confidently beside an electric motor that symbolizes his life's work. The caption 'Electricity' succinctly identifies his claim to fame. Spy's genius lay in creating caricatures that gently exaggerated while preserving dignity, and Salomons is portrayed with the assured bearing of a man who understood the future. The deep navy suit, gold boutonnière, and pocket watch chain speak to Edwardian propriety, while the electrical apparatus grounds the image in his technical achievements. A handsome example of the Vanity Fair portrait tradition at its finest, this piece bridges the worlds of British social history and the technological revolution that was transforming daily life. A standout piece for collectors of scientific history or Edwardian British culture. Size: 15.25" x 10.25" Artist: Sir Leslie Ward (Spy) Condition: Very Good, Age-appropriate wear.
