100 Years of Van Gogh by Milton Glaser

This original 1989 poster was designed by Milton Glaser to commemorate one hundred years since the death of Vincent van Gogh. Created as part of the Van Gogh centenary, the design reflects Glaser’s gift for visual wit and art historical conversation rather than literal tribute. The phrase Ceci n’est pas la pipe de Vincent, translated as “This is not Vincent’s pipe,” knowingly nods to René Magritte’s famous line while playfully questioning authorship, symbolism, and artistic identity. Glaser replaces imitation with interpretation, using color and texture to evoke Van Gogh’s painterly energy without copying any single work. The result is both homage and commentary, clever, irreverent, and unmistakably Glaser. Produced at a moment when graphic design freely engaged with fine art history, this poster sits comfortably between museum culture and contemporary design. It speaks to Glaser’s belief that design should think, reference, and amuse all at once, making it a smart, visually confident celebration of Van Gogh’s lasting influence rather than a straightforward memorial.
