Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera

The Canon EOS R is Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera, introducing the RF lens mount and establishing the foundation for Canon’s mirrorless system aimed at photographers and videographers transitioning from EOS DSLRs. Positioned as an enthusiast and semi-professional body at launch, it balances solid image quality with a new set of mirrorless-specific handling features distinct from Canon’s DSLR lineup. At the core of the EOS R is a 30.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor, delivering detailed stills along with an ISO range suited to a wide variety of lighting conditions. Autofocus is handled by Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, offering dense autofocus point coverage across most of the frame along with reliable subject tracking, including Eye AF for human subjects during both stills and video shooting. Continuous shooting reaches up to 8fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 5fps with continuous autofocus tracking, giving the camera moderate speed suited to casual action and everyday subjects in motion, though not positioned as a high-speed sports camera. Video capability includes 4K recording at up to 30p, notably with a substantial crop factor compared to the full sensor width, along with Full HD recording at higher frame rates for slow motion, and Canon Log support for photographers wanting greater flexibility in color grading during post-production. Handling centers on a distinctive control layout that includes a customizable Multi-Function Bar along the top-rear of the camera, a design element introduced with this generation, along with a fully articulating touchscreen LCD offering flexibility for shooting at various angles and vlogging use. A high-resolution electronic viewfinder rounds out the composing options, and the camera notably lacks in-body image stabilization, relying instead on lens-based stabilization in compatible RF and adapted EF lenses. Build quality includes a weather-resistant magnesium alloy chassis and a single SD card slot (UHS-II compatible). The EOS R uses Canon’s RF lens mount natively while remaining compatible with EF and EF-S lenses via Canon’s mount adapters, giving photographers transitioning from EF-mount DSLRs access to their existing lens collection. Connectivity includes built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless image transfer and remote camera control, along with headphone and microphone jacks for video-focused workflows.
