Vintage 1960s All Original Eero Aarnio Pastil Easy Chair by Asko

Iconic white Pastil chair designed by Eero Aarnio, one of the most influential voices in space age design. Originally created in 1967, the Pastil really captures that moment when furniture started to feel more like sculpture, playful, futuristic, and a little experimental. Aarnio was a Finnish designer known for pushing materials and form in totally new directions. He was one of the first to really embrace fiberglass and plastics in furniture, and his work, including the Ball Chair and Bubble Chair, helped define the look of late 60s and 70s interiors. The Pastil chair itself even earned him the American Industrial Award in 1968 for its comfortable form and unique aesthetic. These are made from molded fiberglass with a glossy white finish, giving them that smooth, seamless, almost liquid shape. The low, rounded form features a deep, sculpted seat that naturally cradles the body. Aarnio himself believed the ergonomics were so well considered that cushions weren’t really necessary, and even The New York Times once noted the design as being especially well-suited to the human body. They also have a subtle rocking quality depending on how you sit, adding to that playful, functional feel that makes the piece so distinctive. Overall, they strike that perfect balance between functional seating and sculptural design, one of those rare pieces that feels just as relevant now as it did in the late 60s, especially as a matching pair in this classic white. Dimensions: Approximately 35.5” in diameter and 20” tall
