Unicel C-8300 | 100 sq ft Caldera Utopia Spa Filter

The Unicel C-8300 is a 100 square foot replacement cartridge for Caldera Utopia Cantabria spas built between 2009 and 2014, replacing Caldera part number 74817 and the identical Hot Spring part 77004. With 259 pleats across an 8" body standing 16-1/2" tall, it is a large, serious cartridge built for a large, serious spa. Both ends are 3-1/8" open with a molded gasket — a rubber sealing ring formed integrally into each end cap face rather than fitted as a separate part. That gasket is what makes the cartridge work. It compresses against the sealing surfaces in the filter housing when the cartridge is seated, closing off the gap that unfiltered water would otherwise use to slip around the outside of the media. Without an effective seal at both ends, a spa can run cloudy with a brand-new 100 square foot filter installed — because a meaningful share of the water is going around it rather than through it. Capacity at this level changes the ownership experience in a way that is easy to underestimate. One hundred square feet does not clean better on any given pass than a fifty. What it does is spread the same debris load across twice the surface, so the cartridge clogs at roughly half the rate, holds jet pressure steadier for far longer between cleanings, and asks much less of a circulation pump that would otherwise be straining against progressively tighter media. On a large spa with real bather load, that is the difference between filter maintenance as a background chore and filter maintenance as a recurring frustration. Media is Unicel's standard 3 oz Reemay polyester — one hundred percent spunbonded polyester over a solid injection-molded core, with chemical-resistant end caps molded to an exact OEM fit, capturing suspended particles down to roughly 20 microns. Pro Tip — read this before ordering if you own a Cantabria. There is a second 100 sq ft Utopia cartridge that is almost impossible to tell apart at a glance. It has the same 100 square feet, the same 259 pleats, the same 8" diameter and 16-1/2" length. The only differences are at the ends. This cartridge has 3-1/8" openings with a molded gasket and no handle. The other has larger 3-5/8" openings, a lip seal, and a semi-circular handle across the top. Cantabria models changed over partway through 2014, so knowing your model year does not settle it — a 2014 Cantabria could take either one.
