Underwater!

Howard Hughes understood spectacle, and this original theatrical one-sheet for "Underwater!" delivers precisely that. Jane Russell floats center stage in a coral bikini, her figure rendered with the era's characteristic blend of glamour and suggestion, while a scuba diver and lurking shark hint at the adventure promised by the tagline's breathless "Skin Diver Action!" The poster captures a specific moment in Hollywood history: the mid-1950s battle against television, fought with widescreen formats and location spectacles. SuperScope, RKO's anamorphic process, receives prominent billing alongside Technicolor, both technical marvels deployed to lure audiences from their living rooms. The underwater adventure genre, freshly legitimized by Cousteau's documentaries, provided perfect material for such visual extravagance. A striking example of Hollywood's golden age promotional art, this piece combines pin-up aesthetics with adventure cinema's promise of exotic thrills. The turquoise depths and Jane Russell's iconic presence make this a standout piece for collectors of 1950s cinema ephemera.
